UMPC is sure portable...but is it TOO portable?

I purchased a Fujitsu U810 in February 2008 to get into the whole tablet craze. Fry's had an amazing deal where you could pick one up for around $800 with tax. Being the gadget geek that I was I picked one up and immediately fell in love with it..

As with all new toys I played with it quite extensively. I used it for my banking, investing, word documents, and even blogging. The U810 worked quite well with the bluetooth mouse and keyboard that I used.

I didn't have any issues until I started noticing that sometimes I would get headaches/motion sickness while using the U810 for > 15 mins. It turns out that due to the small screen with high resolution and the fact that the screen was glossy (this is my first and probably last glossy screen), I was experiencing lots of eye fatigue. The glossiness of the screen would be very distracting with overhead lighting such as uh...the sun, fluorescent lighting (um...like 100% of work offices?), and pretty much everywhere I used the laptop.

I loved the size and the functionality of the tablet. It was actually very productive to be able to scribble things in One Note instead of MS Word. I also loved the fact that in an airplane I could just "write" things on the laptop while in slate mode thus shedding 1/2 the size of it's original size. This is invaluable during travel and makes it quite easy to jot down notes without having to go through the hassle of "opening" up the laptop.

While the size works great during slate mode, the laptop mode is short of being useful. It is nice to be able to "peck" at the keys, but for anything productive it was quite a chore since every key is at least double mapped. Seriously....tab and space on the same key?!?! If you decide to get this laptop, definitely use a wireless bluetooth keyboard (the Thinkgeek ones are great).

I sold the laptop this morning to some guy that I met on Craigslist and was able to get 90% of my money back which is nice. As for now, I'm going to take a break from getting another laptop as I'm carrying 2 T60's for work already and have to do so until September. Once I get rid of one of the T60's I'll go back to hunting for my ultimate machine.

With laptop prices dropping and new ones coming out, it'll be quite interesting to see what's out there. Of course now that I've gotten a taste of the tablets, I'm definitely going to stick with them. If I had one during college, I bet I would still have all of my notes from my courses.
